Artist's note: For this year's SPN/J2 Big Bang I had the pleasure of working with the fantastic fufaraw. Her story intrigued me from the beginning and it only got better and better as it progressed. It took me slightly too long to decide on which scenes to illustrate (there's just so much!) which means that I haven't been able to finish my illustration of Jared, but I'm hoping I'll be able to finish that one somewhere this week. It really didn't help that I felt like I needed to completely change the style five times... I had loads of fun doing these illustrations, though. fufaraw's enthusiasm kept me going and I can't thank her enough for being patient with me! So, without further ado, if you haven't already, go read the story!

Artist's note 2: I have now added the second character illustration!

Artist's notes: This is my second collaboration for this year's Reverse Bang and I had so much fun doing it! broompeople was a dream to work with and came up with a story that exceeded my expectations on so many levels; I came in just wanting a fun Welcome to Night Vale inspired story and got a 15k fic instead -- with an original spin to it and amazing characters. I wish I could've made more additional illustrations than just the one, but I absolutely had to do the one I did do because that scene gave me the most amazing visuals.

Artist's notes: This was my first time participating in a reverse bang and I had SO MUCH fun doing it! I'm absolutely in love with namichan89's writing and thrilled that I got to work with her on this. So all my love to her for coming up with this awesome story! I had a hard time deciding on a scene to illustrate -- I honestly would've made it into an animated film if I'd had the time. I hope everyone enjoys the story as much as I do!

The New-Fallen Snow

When Jensen finally arrived at work, he was late, cold, and somewhat grumpy. It had been over five years since he moved from Texas to New York and he still wasn’t used to the massive amount of snow that fell every December. While he didn’t even drive a car to get stuck in traffic with, every year the snow managed to keep him from arriving at work on time.

“They’re waiting for you,” Katie told him when he entered the main area of the library. His colleague was rearranging the Christmas decorations that littered the front desk; there was barely any space left for books but as they wouldn’t be having many customers that day it didn’t really matter anyway.

Jensen nodded at her, knowing full well that he was expected, and he shoved his coat at her on his way to the stairs. He was just about to ascend to the second floor when Katie stopped him again with a loud whistle, and as he turned around he felt something soft hit his face. He caught it on instinct before glaring at the offensive object in his hands.

“It’s a Christmas story, you have to make some sort of effort,” Katie winked at him.

Jensen sighed, but then shrugged and pulled the bright red Santa hat over his hair. At least it was warm -- he’d only put on a t-shirt underneath his coat and it wasn’t exactly keeping his body temperature up.

When he got to the kids’ corner, at least a dozen children looked up at him expectantly. It always saddened him to see how many little ones were dropped off on Christmas Day because their parents didn’t have the time to spend the holidays with them. One of his other co-workers was watching them for the moment, but after shoving a book at Jensen he quickly retreated to the more quiet parts of the library. Mike had never been that good with kids.

“Alright then, who’s ready for a Christmas story?” Jensen asked the group of youngsters, and they all responded very enthusiastically. He dropped down to lie on his stomach and opened the book Mike had given him. It was a very standard volume with short Christmas tales, and he figured it’d be easiest to just start at the beginning.

The first story was rather chaotic, as the kids were very energetic and kept shouting their own suggestions. Jensen didn’t mind -- he loved kids and sometimes that meant going along in their overactive imaginations. After the first tale he started on ‘The Night Before Christmas’, a relatively short poem but one of his all-time favorites.

He started out alright, but when he reached the second verse of the story Jensen felt someone pull his Santa hat over his eyes.

“Hey!” he grumbled, turning towards his assailant. He blushed when he saw who it was. He’d only met Jared a few weeks back, but the younger student had taken an instant liking to him after Jensen helped him with a college project. The guy was incredibly cute and didn’t seem to have an understanding of the concept of personal space, though Jensen was quite sure he behaved like that around everybody. Which was a bit of a shame, because he really liked his new friend.

Jared grinned at him, all teeth and dimples, and Jensen pushed the hat back a little bit further than he normally would, rearranging the hair that was now uncovered back into their neat little spikes.

Luckily, no-one had noticed his discomfort. Jared was now greeting the children sitting in front of Jensen, and he had all of them giggling with his antics. Shaking his head with a smile, Jensen tried to get back to the story, but then Jared dropped down next to him and put an arm around his shoulders.

“Let’s continue together, alright?” he said, grinning, and Jensen couldn’t do anything but agree. “I’ll be Santa!” Jared continued gleefully.

Jensen picked up the story where he’d left off and continued the poem. When he got to the part where Santa speaks, Jared squeezed him even tighter and pressed his face against Jensen’s cheek, so he could read the text better. He merrily addressed his reindeer and used such an over-the-top voice that he had all the kids giggling again.

Jensen took over again and was alright until he reached a stanza nearer the end. “His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry!” he read, and then made the mistake of looking at Jared. Jared, smiling so brightly at him that Jensen felt like that piece of poetry was written just for him. “His cheeks,” he continued, blushing, clearing his throat. “His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!” Being reminded of Santa made Jensen readdress his attention to the kids in front of him, but he was still very aware of Jared lying next to him.

The rest of the story went without a hitch, but the line of Jared’s body pressed into his made him feel warm and fuzzy all-over, and he couldn’t help but think he was glad that the children were in front of them because otherwise it would’ve gotten a lot more inappropriate.

The rest of the afternoon, Jared hung around and helped Jensen entertain the kids. Just after 5pm, when the library was closing early because of Christmas and all parents had collected their children, Jared helped Jensen lock up as they were the last ones to leave.

“So, what brought you to the library on this festive day?” Jensen asked the other man. “Aren’t you supposed to be celebrating?”

Jared grinned sheepishly. “Nah. I was supposed to have dinner with my sister, but her boyfriend took her on a surprise skiing trip. I thought about visiting my parents for a bit, but then I ran into Katie the other day and she told me you’d be spending Christmas at the library. I figured I might as well, you know, keep you company. Other than the kids, that is.”

Wait, what?

“You were here… because of me?” Jensen asked, trying (and failing) to not to sound too hopeful.

“Yeah,” Jared laughed. “Maybe a bit stupid, but I really like you, Jen. I thought—I don’t really know what I was thinking, to be honest, just—“

Jensen decided to take a leap of faith, hoping he was right about this, and stepped closer to Jared, whose eyes widened as he noticed Jensen’s approach. He fell silent, and Jensen took his chance.

“Mistletoe,” he said, looking upwards. Jared looked up, but frowned when the dark sky blinked back at him.

“Just kidding,” Jensen continued, but he kissed Jared anyway.

Jared sighed against his lips, and that was all Jensen needed as confirmation that this was alright. He tangled his fingers through his friend’s hair to pull him closer.

“Been wanting to do that since I first saw you,” Jared whispered against his lips, and Jensen couldn’t help but smile.

“Same,” he admitted, pulling back a bit so he could look into the taller man’s eyes. “How do you feel about Christmas dinner?”

Jared grinned back at him. “Sounds good.”

And a very merry Christmas it was.
